Pulling Some Strings: The Shaddoll Standard

Hey, everyone. I’m back this week to talk about the standard stuff ran in Shaddolls. Now that there has been an Alter Reality Games Circuit Series and many regionals there has been a lot of Shaddoll decklists and a lot of the same cards ran among all of those decklists. I’m going to start off by giving you two different decklists. The first decklist will be a Pure Shaddoll decklist from the Arizona Regionals where Zak Aossey got 2nd place. The second decklist will be a Shaddoll Artifact decklist from Alter Reality Games Circuit Series Atlantic City top 16 where Garyd Boyd made top 4.

I’m about to talk about some of the differences in both decklists.

ArtifactMoralltach-PRIO-EN-SR-1E (1)The first four cards I want to talk about that Garyd ran and not Zak are Artifact Moralltach, Artifact Beagalltach, Artifact Sanctumand Double CycloneArtifact Moralltach is good for destroying problem face-up cards like Royal Command and Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror which are almost auto-wins vs most Shaddoll decks if they can’t destroy it. Artifact Beagalltach is for when you draw Artifact Moralltach you can set him out of your hand and then you can either destroy Beagalltach or special summon it with Artifact Sanctum which triggers Beagalltach’s mandatory effect to destroy up to 2 set spell or trap cards you control (which includes Artifact Moralltach because it counts as a spell or trap).

Double Cyclone is used to destroy your set Artifact monsters which triggers their effects and to destroy one spell or trap card your opponent controls. Double Cyclone isn’t always used to destroy your artifact cards sometimes you have to use it to destroy floodgate card. One example of this is lets say you have Double Cyclone set and you activate Shaddoll Fusion, and your opponent chains Vanity’s Emptiness, you can then chain Double Cyclone destroying Shaddoll Fusion and Vanity’s Emptiness which will then let you resolve your Shaddoll Fusion.

One interesting card Zak ran that Garyd didn’t was Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress. Lyla is pretty good for destroying floodgate cards and milling 3 cards from the top of your deck at the end phase. Lyla is also a level 4 monster so it helps you overlay into rank 4 XYZ’s. Another benefit of Lyla is she is a Light-Type monster so she fuels the graveyard for Chaos Sorcerer and Black Luster Soldier Envoy of the Beginning (if you run them).

Both side decks were pretty standard I didn’t think anything in was worth mentioning.

DigvorzhakKingofHeavyIndustry-YCSW-EN-UR-LEFor the extra deck one card stood out to me and that was Garyd ran Digvorzahak, King of Heavy Industry and Zak didn’t. I don’t actually think this card is too good and even if it is really good it is hard to make since it takes 3 level 5 monsters. I think the main reason Garyd ran Digvorzahak, King of Heavy Industry is really because he owned one, lets be honest most of us would run this card if we had one.

The two above decklists are the ways I come up with the standard Shaddoll decklist for both Pure Shaddoll and Shaddoll Artifact.

With that being said I am going to give you a standard Shaddoll skeleton for Pure Shaddolls and Shaddoll Artifacts.

I’m going to start out with Pure Shaddolls.

Main deck:

Side deck:

The side deck is really just player preference but I would recommend siding some cards to get rid of continuous spells and traps because this deck has a hard time winning while your opponent has floodgates on the field.

Extra deck:

Then the rest of the cards for each section is player preference. That’s all of the main cards you need to play in Pure Shaddolls but Shaddoll Artifacts are way different so let’s talk about a good skeleton for them.

Here is the Shaddoll Artifact skeleton that I have created based on what topped Alter Reality Games Circuit Series Atlantic City and what topped the regionals that happened this previous weekend.

Main deck:

  • 2 Shaddoll Beast
  • 2 Shaddoll Squamata
  • 2 Shaddoll Falco
  • 2-3 Shaddoll Hedgehog
  • 2-3 Shaddoll Dragon
  • 2-3 Mathematician or Armageddon knight
  • 3 Artifact Moralltach
  • 0-2 Artifact Beagalltach
  • 1 Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning
  • 0-2 Chaos Sorcerer
  • 0-1 Felis, Lightsworn Archer
  • 0-2 Soul Charge
  • 0-1 Allure of Darkness
  • 0-3 Artifact Ignition
  • 1 Foolish Burial
  • 3 Shaddoll Fusion
  • 3 Artifact Sanctum
  • 1-3 Sinister Shadow Games
  • 0-1 Shaddoll Core

Side deck:

The side deck is really just player preference but I would recommend siding some cards to get rid of continuous spells and traps because this deck has a hard time winning while your opponent has floodgates on the field.

Extra deck:

  • 2-3 El Shaddoll Winda
  • 2-3 El Shaddoll Construct
  • 0-1 Number 61: Volcasaurus
  • 0-1 Constellar Pleiades
  • 1 Number 101: Silent Honor ARK
  • 1 Evilswarm Exciton Knight
  • 1 Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer
  • 1 Armades, the Keeper of Boundaries
  • 1 Arcanite Magician
  • 1 Goyo Guardian
  • 1 Black Rose Dragon
  • 0-1 Michael, the Arch-Lightsworn
  • 0-1 Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons

The rest of the spots for each section is player’s preference. That is all of the main cards that are needed to play Shaddoll Artifacts. Now I am going to explain why you play each card that is on the list and for each deck.

This first section will be for cards you could play in both Pure Shaddolls and Shaddoll Artifacts.

300px-Mathematician-DRLG-EN-ScR-1EThe reason you run Mathematician or Armageddon Knight is because he can send the Shaddoll monsters, Felis, the Lightsworn Archer, and other light and dark monsters to the graveyard to get their effects, or to just send them to the graveyard for boss cards which we will get to next.

The reason you use Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and/or Chaos Sorcerer is because they are your easy to summon big boss monsters that banish monsters on the field or with Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning he can also attack twice if he destroys and opponent’s monster with the first attack.

The reason you might run Felis, the Lightsworn Archer is because you can send her to the graveyard with Mathematician and she will special summon herself and you can either make a one card Black Rose Dragon by Synchroing with Mathematician and Felis or you can use Felis’ effect to tribute her and destroy one card on the field and mill three cards from your deck. She is also one of your few light monsters you can use to be banished by Chaos Sorcerer or Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the beginning.

The reason you might run Soul Charge is pretty obvious. Soul Charge is competing for one of the best cards in the game being able to top deck it or just hold it into the late game and summon back all of your monsters to either Synchro summon, XYZ summon, Fusion Summon, or just sit there and beat down your opponent. What makes Soul Charge even better in this deck is that this deck relies on sending monsters to the graveyard to get their effects or to have fodder for Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the beginning and Chaos Sorcerer so you will almost always have monsters in the graveyard to special summon back with Soul Charge.

The reason Foolish Burial is so amazing in this deck is because you rely on sending monsters from your deck to your graveyard for one reason or another and Foolish Burial does just that. One pretty good play if you open Foolish Burial or just have it later on is you can send Shaddoll Squamata from your deck to the graveyard which will make it’s effect trigger sending another Shaddoll monster from your deck to your graveyard so you can send Shaddoll Falco to your graveyard which will make it’s effect trigger special summoning it in face-down defense position to your side of the field and when it is flipped face-up it’s effect will activate special summoning a Shaddoll monster from your graveyard in face-down defense position and since you already sent Shaddoll Squamata you can just special summon him in face-down defense position and when he flips face-up you get his effect to destroy a monster on the field.

Now since I am done explaining the main deck I am get right into the extra deck.

The reason you run Evilswarm Exciton Knight is so when you are losing you can make a comeback play with just one card that can win you the game by itself. This card also triggers the effects of all Shaddoll monsters it destroys which can help you be in an even better situation after you just cleared the field.

333px-CasteltheSkyblasterMusketeer-DUEA-EN-SR-1EThe reason you run Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer is because you can either detach two XYZ materials from it and shuffle a face-up card on the field into the deck which gets rid of problem cards or you can detach one XYZ material from it to put a face-up monster on the field into face-down defense position which stops the effect of problem monsters since they are no longer face-up on the field.

The reason you run Armades, the Keeper of Boundaries is because it stops card effects from activating after it declares an attack until after damage calculation so it’s attack cannot be negated and it stops flip-effects like Shaddoll monsters and Gravekeeper’s Spy and it also stops destruction effects like Fire and Ice Hand and also all of the Burning Abyss monster’s effects.

The reason you run Arcanite Magician is so you have more destruction effects and it’s just a really good level 7 Synchro monster in general. You can use Arcanite Magician to bait out backrows your opponent may have so you can do the play you actually wanted to do.

The reason you run Goyo Guardian is because well, it’s Goyo Guardian it takes your opponent’s monsters after destroying them in battle and once you take them you are free to use them to XYZ summon, Synchro Summon, Fusion Summon, or Tribute Summon without even your own monster so you practically get your own monster to use for free. Goyo Guardian also just has 2800 attack and since when the monster is destroy in damage step, Goyo Guardian special summons the monster in damage step so your opponent can’t really respond to the summon of the monster unless they have a counter trap of some sort.

The reason you run Black Rose Dragon is it blows up the entire field so you can summon Black Rose Dragon to nuke the entire field and then use Soul Charge to summon what you want back and now you have a pretty good field and your opponent has no field at all. You can also just use Black Rose Dragon to bait out cards like Breakthrough Skill and Fiendish Chain.

The reason you may run Michael, the Arch-Lightsworn is because at the cost of 1000 life points he is an easy out to El Shaddoll Winda and other problem cards. Michael also mills card at the end phase so you can hopefully mill Shaddoll monsters or other good monsters to mill.

BeelzeoftheDiabolicDragons-PGLD-EN-GScR-1EThe last card that both versions of Shaddolls may run is Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons. The reason you may run Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons is because it can’t be destroyed by battle or card effects and it has 3000 attack and 3000 defense. When your opponent finally gets over it if they get it to the graveyard it is a dark monster so it is fodder for Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and Chaos Sorcerer.

Now it is time to get to cards only Pure Shaddolls run.

The reason you run White Dragon Wyverburster and Black Dragon Collapserpent is because they are very easy to summon level 4 monsters that when they leave the field they search their light or dark counterpart. These two cards make it really easy to summon all of the rank 4 XYZ’s.

Now time for the extra deck section that only has one card difference in it.

The only card that only Pure Shaddolls run for the extra deck is Leo, Keeper of the Sacred Tree. The reason Pure Shaddolls run this is because except during your main phase 2 this card is untargetable and has 3100 attack so is pretty hard to destroy in battle.

Next I will talk about the cards only Shaddoll Artifacts run.

The reason they run Artifact Moralltach, Artifact Beagalltach, maybe Artifact Ignition, and Artifact Sanctum is because that is the second engine in the Shaddoll Artifact deck with the first engine being Shaddolls. The Artifact monsters are also light monsters so they work really well making it easier to Fusion summon El Shaddoll Construct.

Now it is on to the extra deck cards only Shaddoll Artifacts run.

300px-Number61Volcasaurus-ZTIN-EN-UR-1E (1)The first card that mostly only Shaddoll Artifacts run is Number 61: Volcasaurus. The reason they run Volcasaurus is because it burns your opponent while also getting rid of monsters which seems pretty good to me.

The reason they run Constellar Pleiades is because with the Artifact engine it isn’t too hard to get out two light monsters and with those to light monsters they can XYZ summon Constellar Pleiades to bounce back cards on the field to their owner’s hand.

Well folks, that was my article for this week I hope you enjoyed it and come back next week for more articles from me. Also check out all of the other article Hotsauce Games writers have wrote and have a good day!
