Aaron Furman ARGCS Atlantic City 1st Place Satellarknight Tournament Report

SatellarknightDeneb-DUEA-EN-UR-1EHello fellow duelists, today I’m writing about my tournament report from Alter Reality Games Circuit Series Atlantic City this past weekend. The set Duelist Alliance just came out and the deck I chose to play for the tournament was Satellarknights. When I was at Gencon the weekend before this was the only deck I was playing there and out of all of the tournaments I entered there I didn’t lose a match. At this point I knew I was going to run Satellarknights for the ARGCS. The Wednesday before the ARGCS I was on Skype with the usual people Tahmid, TJ Kinsley, Denny Yu, and Josh Furlong and I decided to play TJ with Satellarknights. He was playing Batteryman OTK and this got me worried. I started to lose 50 percent of the matches because of how fast I was getting OTK’d. Once I was done playing I started to build the Batteryman OTK deck and seriously started to think about playing it for the ARGCS. The next day I got back on Skype and started to play the Batteryman deck, but I kept losing the majority of the games or I would just draw dead. I didn’t feel confident about what to play at this point and just turned back to playing Satellarknights. Later in the day I went to the airport to pick up my friend Alyx Lisgathe who was flying in for the event.

I started talking to him about what he was going to play and certain card choices. He was going to play Satellarknights as well and most of the card choices were the same as the version Tahmid sent me. This was the version I was going to run

UpstartGoblinDB1-EN-C-UEThis was the version that Alyx, Tahmid, and Tyree were running for this event. Before the event when I was building my deck I decided not play Upstart Goblin. I never really liked that card because it gave more life points to your opponent so it took you longer to kill them since the Satellarknight deck didn’t really have an OTK so I felt like they were unnecessary. So I decided to take them out for a third Soul Charge, third Pot of Duality, and a second Satellarknight Vega. Another card I decided to play that they didn’t is Battleguard Howling. It has just been released in the new set and I liked what the effect did because of it combination of a Compulsory Evacuation Device and Magical Cylinders. So I took out a Dimensional Prison for it. I also decided to play that they did not was two Wiretap. This card is really good against all of the match ups and you really need your Satellarknight Deneb to resolve to get the ball rolling for your deck. In the extra deck I only changed one card and it was Heroic Champion – Gandiva for a second Satellarknight Delteros. There are multiple time when I have played I can make a second Delteros against most match ups and I felt that a lot of people were not going to run Satellarknight because of the hype on Shaddolls and Burning Abyss. So I decide not to run Gandiva because of the lack of mirror matches.

StygianDirge-DL16-EN-R-UE-RedIn the side deck we had a good outline of it before Saturday it was going to be three Stygian Dirge, three Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror, Soul Drain, Dimensional Fissure, Thunder King Rai-oh and three Maxx “C”. Then we decided we had to side something just for Infernitys just in case people were still playing it and it was Needle Ceiling. The rest of the side was kind of off what we wanted to play. So I put in one Chain Disappearance for Burning Abyss and one Full House. The one Full House was just for if someone was playing H.A.T. still or against the mirror match if they knew about Stygian Dirge. It was just another card that can help destroy Stygian Dirge when needed too. So this was my final deck list that I played.

Monsters: 11

3 Satellarknight Altair
3 Satellarknight Unukalhai

BattleguardHowling-DUEA-EN-C-1EI did decide to run 41 cards in my main deck. A lot of people say that this is foolish and you want to draw your better card faster so run fewer cards. Well when I was building it I didn’t know what to cut. People would say I didn’t have to play Battleguard Howling, but that wasn’t my 41st card it just replaced the Dimensional Prison so it was in the original 40-card deck list and I felt every card in my deck was good and I didn’t want to cut anything. So I decide to play 41 and didn’t look back. When I got my second place at ARGCS DC I was playing 41 and when I got my third place at ARGCS Milwaukee I was playing with 41 cards as well so it didn’t really faze me to doing it again.

Round 1: Alistar Albans (Shaddoll)

This was the written feature match for round one.

Round 2: (E-Hero/Hands)

Game 1: I open up with double Vanity’s Emptiness and double Breakthrough Skill and I end up losing to two Neos Alius and a Fire Hand.
Game 2: I thought for sure after what happened game one I was going to lose. I end up Needle Ceiling away all of his monsters and he doesn’t draw anymore and I end beating him down with a Satellarknight Altair.
Game 3: He Draw really bad I have Stellarnova Alpha and a Satellarknight Deneb so I gain far too much advantage for him to win.

Round 3:(Bujins)

300px-DimensionalPrison-SDCR-EN-C-1E (1)Game 1: I start with Deneb searching Altair and setting 3. He summons Yamato and attacking into a Dimensional Prison and can’t come back from losing his Yamato.
Game 2: he starts off with Yamato, Kaiser and a backrow. I Space Typhoon his Kaiser and summon Satellarknight Vega to special Satellarknight Unukalhai then made Silent Honor Ark and set three backrow. He couldn’t beat over Ark and Vanity’s and ends up losing a few turns later.

Round 4: Josh Furlong (Shaddoll)

Game 1: I don’t open Deneb or Unukalhai and have to grand through the game waiting to draw one or a Reinforcement of the Army. Eventually I get it and start to build up advantage until he couldn’t handle multiple backrow and my free searches every turn.
Game 2: This goes by very fast I have Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror and Vanitys with a Constellar Omega on board and he can’t make a play.

Round 5: Kenneth McCarthy (Burning Abyss)

Game 1: Most of the game I was in a losing position then later I started to notice I was gaining card advantage and he was out of Tour Guides and couldn’t keep making rank 3s.

Game 2: The same thing happened this game and he ran out of Tour Guides and started to lose momentum and I started to gain advantage with all of my Deneb searches.

VanitysEmptinessSTBL-EN-C-1ERound 6: (Shaddoll)

Game 1: He stops my Altair play with Vanity’s and I couldn’t handle an El Shaddoll Construct.
Game 2: He has every card to stop me I didn’t even get to play this game. He had Breakthrough Skill and Vanity’s to stop most of my plays as well as having Super Polymerization.

So at this point I am now 5-1 and will have to win two more rounds to make top 16.

Round 7: Jarred Randolph (Spellbooks)

Game 1: I go first and I’m able to stop his Spellbook Magicians from resolving and end up going through all of his backrow. This game ends once I’m at a plus 4 on him.
Game 2: I couldn’t deal with his set up of High Priestess, Spellbook of Tower, Spellbook of Fate, and multiple backrow.
Game 3: This game goes a lot like game one and he is unable to resolve much. I open Deneb and double Stellarnova. He couldn’t resolve any of his searches and loses very shortly.

300px-SoulCharge-DRLG-EN-SR-1ERound 8: Jerry Williams (Shaddoll)

Game 1: I open fairly decent but he opens much better. He grinds through my back row and then drops Dark Armed Dragon to finish me off. Feeling kind of depresses because I though it was going to be my second loss.
Game 2: I open the nuts against him. Deneb, Stellarnova, Solemn Warning, Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror and Soul Charge. I quickly win this game.
Game 3: I gain major advantage fast then he makes a El Shaddoll Construct and I couldn’t deal with it and had to D-up for a few turns until I drew an out. I ended up drawing Dimensional Prison and proceed to win the game.

Round 9: (Satellarknights)

For this round for a guaranteed top I tied with my opponent.

After swiss I was 5th place with a record of 7-1-1. I found out whom I would have to play tomorrow and talk with the others who top with me and to see whom they would have to play as well. I find out I have to play Burning Abyss and got a little worried. I didn’t have too much testing against this deck and thought I could get really unlucky and draw nothing but monsters. That night we went back to my house and grabbed Tahmid’s stuff because he was going home that night because he didn’t want to stay around for day two. Once we drop him off at the bus station and went to sleep.

300px-supplysquad-ys14-en-c-1e (1)Top 16: (Burning Abyss)

Game 1: He opens double Supply Squad and Mathematician with Solemn Warning and Karma Cut. I couldn’t make a play except attacking into his monsters and give him even more advantage. I scoop it up when I notice I can’t come back.

Game 2: I open Deneb, Stellarnova Alpha, Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror, Stygian Dirge, and Soul Drain. He took care of Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror and Soul Drain. But once he got rid of those he lost advantage and couldn’t deal with Stygian Dirge. He ended up admitting defeat the turn after Dirge was flipped.

Game 3: We start the game off going back and forth I go through two Effect Veilers, two Tour Guides, Chaos Sorcerer, and Black Luster Soldier. Once I made a stable board with a few floodgate cards he couldn’t deal. He made a few attempts to try and draw into something he needed with Supply Squad, but no luck.

Top 8:(Burning Abyss)

At this point I move onto top 4 and was excited because two of my friends had made top 4 as well Nick Ma and Tyree Tinsley.

Top 4:( Artifact-Shaddolls)

I didn’t feel very confident going into this match because two of my friends who previously played him lost to him because of either him top decking cards or him getting lucky with his Shaddoll Dragon hits. Once game one ends and I win my nerves stop and I felt very confident because of just all the cards I side decked for this match up and me knowing his deck list he didn’t have blow out cards like Royal Decree or Malevolent Catastrophe.

Once this match was over they told be I had to sit at a certain table so I wouldn’t be watching the other top 4 match. So I found Joe Giorlando to see if he wanted to play old format decks while I wait for my Final match. We played Troop Dupe Format and D.A.D. Return. Their match takes extra long probably about an hour and a half. Once their match is over I find out I have to play Tyree. So we both sit down and instead of looking at each other deck lists we hand each other our decks to just look at. I only glance through the main deck because I knew it already, so I quickly go through the side to see if there were any last minute changes and then we began.

heroic_champion___gandiva_by_grezar-d583cpmFinals: Tyree Tinsley (Satellarknights)

During this match I noticed out of all 5 games that Tyree and I played that Heroic Champion – Gandiva is very important in the mirror. There were multiple times I could have brought it out that it would have been useful. This would probably be one of the cards that I would put in my deck list if I choose to play Satellarknights again.

Once the match was over we got our pictures taken and I did a quick deck profile before we all got kicked out of the convention center. When we got back to my house we all helped clean up the house and then Corey and his friend went back to Delaware while Alyx and I went to the movies. Later that night we pick Brandon Wigley up from Atlantic City and I was going to drop him and Alyx off in Philadelphia in the morning. This weekend was one of the best times I have ever had.

Thank you for reading my ARG Circuit Series AC tournament report. Let me know what you think of the deck I chose to play in the comments below.
